For the first 15 years of Alban Vineyards, John couldn’t afford to keep more than 20% of the fruit he raised. Chardonnay was an easy sell and suited to a broad spectrum of soils. As Alban Vineyards progressed and the contracts for the Chardonnay and Pinot lapsed, we were in a position to keep the blocks. They were methodically grafted and became the foundation for Patrina. The Pinot noir was harvested coldand allowed to push a cap before getting one homogenizing pumpover as primary fermentation began. Ina year that was hot and drythere was a threat of heaviness, sothe wine saw minimal cap management, gentle press downs or pumpovers as the fermentation temperature peaked,and was pressed when dry. Grenache (Garnacha) "Gambrels of the Sky" comes from an Emily Dickinson poem entitled “I dwell in Possibility,” and though this feels a little lofty, it seemed appropriate for a wine dedicated to my remarkable grandmother, Frances Howard Peterson. Not only did she love poetry, she also loved cooking, science, and wine.

The Legan vineyard is a rugged own-rooted planting of Pinot Noir situated at 1,600’ above the tiny community of Coralitos. The hearty vines at Legan are surrounded by the dense Redwood forest of the Southern Santa Cruz Mountains and have been dry farmed since 1980 in deep sandy loam soil. The cooling influence of the nearby Monterey Bay allows for a long steady growing season that coaxes delicate nuance from the fruit grown here. This vineyard spoke to us the moment we set foot in it and thanks to the meticulous work of viticulturist Prudy Foxx we look forward to stewardship of this special site. Learn More
