Cockburn's was founded in 1815 by Robert Cockburn, a soldier who served in Portugal during the Peninsular War. Robert was later joined in his Port business by his sons, Archibald and Alexander. Their magnificent 645-acre Quinta dos Canais vineyard, in the Upper Douro Valley, has formed the backbone of Cockburn's vintages for nearly 100 years. Cockburn's, one of the greateast names in the Port, led the development of vineyards in Portugal's Upper Douro Valley in the 19th and 20th centuries.
