The Pinot noir was harvested coldand allowed to push a cap before getting one homogenizing pumpover as primary fermentation began. Ina year that was hot and drythere was a threat of heaviness, sothe wine saw minimal cap management, gentle press downs or pumpovers as the fermentation temperature peaked,and was pressed when dry. The Legan vineyard is a rugged own-rooted planting of Pinot Noir situated at 1,600’ above the tiny community of Coralitos. The hearty vines at Legan are surrounded by the dense Redwood forest of the Southern Santa Cruz Mountains and have been dry farmed since 1980 in deep sandy loam soil. The cooling influence of the nearby Monterey Bay allows for a long steady growing season that coaxes delicate nuance from the fruit grown here. This vineyard spoke to us the moment we set foot in it and thanks to the meticulous work of viticulturist Prudy Foxx we look forward to stewardship of this special site. Learn More

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru wafts from the glass with a beautifully complex bouquet of sweet wild berries cherries grilled meats raw cocoa and cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied deep and reserved with a layered multidimensional core tangy acids and velvety tannins concluding with a long pure finish. The 2017 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru matures in around 50% new oak has a well-defined bouquet with scents of Earl Grey infusing the dark berry fruit (darker than Rossignol-Trapet’s Premier Crus for example.) The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry slightly tertiary in style with subtle torrefaction notes but well balanced with impressive substance on the finish a tingle of white pepper on the aftertaste. The lieux-dit, Chambertin is charged with prestige. Perhaps one of Burgundy's most aristocratic appellations and greatest terroir. The domaine purchased its parcel in 1919 and the goal has been always to show off the underlying terroir, creating soil-driven and absolutely pure wines harkening to an earlier era. There is an emphasis on pure red plum and black cherry fruit, notes of grilled meat, cocoa powder, lovely soil tones surrounded by a judicious framing of oak tannins.

The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two plots apparently from 2019 the domaine plans two separate cuvées one from the lieu-dit of "Les Gemeaux". It has an understated beautifully defined bouquet that gradually unfurls in the glass: brambly red berry fruit autumn leaves and hints of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is born with a pitch perfect line of acidity that imparts an engaging sense of harmony very pure with a dash of spice on the finish. Superb. Learn More
