Quarry Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon always offers an intriguing combination of flavors, and this vintage is no exception. Its aromas of cherry, dried herb, and tobacco are reflected in the flavors on the palate, with additional earth and mineral notes. Toasty French oak adds vanilla and char components which blend gracefully with the fruit. From the glass, the wine immediately sings of black cherry and plum interlaced with creamy notes of vanilla, nutmeg and hoisin sauce. The vineyards where the grapes for Camartina are grown have been cultivated organically since 1988 and have been converted to a strict biodynamic standard in 2000. The grapes are carefully selected in the vineyards and harvested in 8-kilo crates. They are destemmed, uncrushed, and then conveyed into temperature-controlled, stainless-steel vats or, just for the very best parcels, small temperature-controlled concrete vats. Here, alcoholic fermentation, maceration, and malolactic fermentation take place. Macerations last about 12 days for the Sangiovese and up to 20 days for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Learn More

2017 was a very challenging year, as most of their vineyards in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja were affected by frost, unlike others in nearby Laguardia. Not only was it frost, but they also had hail later on in the season. Quantities suffered—they told me they lost 70% of the crop in Rioja that year—but they were happy about the quality of the 2017 Macán, being very careful with the fermentation and separating the press wine by quality.
