Cockburn's was founded in 1815 by Robert Cockburn, a soldier who served in Portugal during the Peninsular War. Robert was later joined in his Port business by his sons, Archibald and Alexander. Their magnificent 645-acre Quinta dos Canais vineyard, in the Upper Douro Valley, has formed the backbone of Cockburn's vintages for nearly 100 years. Cockburn's, one of the greateast names in the Port, led the development of vineyards in Portugal's Upper Douro Valley in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its innovative vineyard practices was instrumental in promoting and conserving the indigenous touriga nacional grape varietal. They also have the most wood casks and is the only Port company with its own dedicated team of coopers. In 2010, Cockburn's celebrated its 195th birthday by returning to family ownership. The company became owned by the Symington Family—Port producers for over 125 years, the largest vineyard owners in the Douro (2,330 acres), accounts for 30% of all premium Port production, and is the most-awarded Port company in the world.
