Ample winter rains provided welcome soil saturation for the growing season and canopy development. Spring was a bit cooler and rainier than in the last couple of years, resulting in bud break and flowering being delayed a few weeks compared to 2018.
The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru was reduced by one-third due to the frost, unorthodox in that it affected the higher part of Etienne's vines. It has a slightly more rustic, almost obdurate nose than the previous two vintages, with touches of dried blood and something almost ferrous sutured into the red berry fruit.
The 2021 is the largest and most complex blend we've ever made with dozens of components from vineyards across the realm of Napa Valley. This vintage includes new vineyard sources from Calistoga, Rutherford and Oak Knoll AVA, allowing us to broaden our painter’s palette.
19 Crimes tells the true story of rulebreakers who beat the odds and overcame adversity to become folk heroes. Most of them had remarkable stories like Dracula. So when a 500-year old dinner guest drops by, pour him a glass of this limited edition Red Blend and let’s get the evening started. Just no garlic, please. Rich and round with a soft fruity finish. Sweet aromatics with notes of chocolate.
Over the years, we have been fortunate to work with many great vineyards that span a diverse and varied view into a region that many would call the heartland of California Pinot Noir. Our goal is to create a wine that shows the essence of this iconic appellation. No matter the vintage, there is often a recognizably complex mouthfeel, bright red fruit, and texture to the wine. This vintage displays beautiful cranberry and boysenberry notes, with layered baking spices, complemented by a hint of vanilla on the finish.
