Beloved by mixologists, Dubonnet Rouge is a staple at any high-class cocktail bar. It traces its roots all the way back to 1846, when Parisian chemist and wine merchant Joseph Dubonnet developed it in order to please the palates of French soldiers battling malaria.
The nine hectares of Haut Lieu have the richest soils and generally yield the most precocious wines. Since its founding in 1928, Vouvray’s Domaine Huet has been the standard-bearer for great, age-worthy Chenin Blanc.
From 70-year-old vines, Lorenzon's 2015 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Barraults Blanc is eminent, spreading out in the glass with notes of mirabelle plum, new peach and white blossoms.
The excellent 2016 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Cras Vieilles Vignes Cuvée Claude Denogent offers up aromas of ripe pears, confit citrus, vanilla pod and mint, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered palate that's deep and powerful but more structured than the voluptuous Clos Reyssié, built around ripe acids and chalky dry extract.
L'Embleme Des Rives Bordeaux 2019 is a captivating red wine from the Bordeaux region, renowned for its exceptional quality and rich character. This vintage boasts a harmonious blend of classic Bordeaux grape varieties, resulting in a well-balanced and full-bodied wine.
The lieux-dit, Chambertin is charged with prestige. Perhaps one of Burgundy's most aristocratic appellations and greatest terroir. The domaine purchased its parcel in 1919 and the goal has been always to show off the underlying terroir, creating soil-driven and absolutely pure wines harkening to an earlier era.
Every wine by Domaine Lucien Boillot is a classic representation of its appellation–from Volnay and Pommard to Gevrey and Nuits-Saint-Georges, as Pierre’s work in the cellars is geared towards transparent, terroir-driven wines of purity and finesse.
This medium-bodied wine is harmonious, with forward, plump fruit and a silky texture that is balanced by round, gentle tannins and an elegant structure. 2022 is shaping up to be one of those rare, remarkable vintages in which weather patterns conspire to produce wines of outstanding quality.
The finest rendition of this cuvée to date, Santenay Les Vignes Denses derives from high-density plantings in lieu-dit Les Prarons. Unwinding in the glass with notions of crisp Anjou pear, lemon oil, vanilla pod and crushed chalk, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and complete, with a deep core of fruit that's framed by chalky dry extract and racy acids. This is worth a special effort to seek out.
2022 is an outstanding Burgundy vintage: a warm and dry year that has produced wines with very high levels of ripeness and power, but which remain beautifully balanced and fresh-tasting too. The quality of the grapes was as good as many growers had ever seen.
Revisited in bottle, the 2021 Santenay Rouge Gravité has fulfilled all the potential it displayed from barrel. Mingling aromas of blackberries and cassis with hints of menthol, orange oil and exotic spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and velvety, with a fleshy, strikingly concentrated core of fruit that's framed by supple tannins, concluding with a long, saline finish.
