The 2016 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza was surprising, spectacular, elegant, clean and fresh like few vintages before. It was a superb year, with quality, quantity and freshness. It's quite the opposite from the previous 2015, which was a much warmer and riper year.
Extraordinary dark cherry red color, intense violet, Mediterranean thyme and cassis aromas joined by notes of cocoa and spice. Full and intense on the palate, with ripe, velvety and elegant tannins. Flavorful and full bodied, with a characteristic, terror-imparted hint of graphite minerality.
A blend of Garnacha Tintorera, Palomino, Trousseau, Garnacha, and Mencia, from vineyards that range from 800-1000 meters in altitude. Grapes are de-stemmed and fermentation and aging is in a combination of tanks, amphorae, and cement eggs. A lovely, light bodied red, with subtle tannic structure, and bright red floral aromatics.
This Priorat is created mostly created with Merlot and Syrah grapes. Loads of cherry, leather, and blueberry. Some almonds, plum, and strawberry. A clean wine without oak influence.
Javier Revert has created a beautifully focussed expression of Bobal in this field blend which includes 30% white grapes. Smokey yet fresh with black cherry, Mediterranean herbs, and a hint of black olive.
Destí is intense dark-cherry red in color with a garnet rim. Complex on the nose with aromatic notes of red fruit, especially raspberries and redcurrants, balanced by spicy tones against a backdrop of cassis. It has a balsamic taste across the palate, with hints of sloes and pomegranates. Elegant and silky, it is well balanced with sweet, rounded tannins that lead to a smooth, lingering finish.
Pedrabona from the Josep Grau winery is a project located in the Priorat, most of the vineyards are near Gratallops, some small ones can also be found in Pla de Falset. The old vines of Garnacha Tinta and Cariñena grow on the typical Llicorella slate soils.
Poggio Antico’s first Super Tuscan, named after one of the three properties which gave life to the winery. 50% Sangiovese and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, it reveals balanced power and elegance.
A blend of 70% Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 24 months in French and American oak. The wine exhibits a glass-coating opaque purple color. The nose is expressive with pain grille, underbrush, brier, minerality, blueberry and blackberry fruit. On the palate is a plush, opulent wine with great density, savory flavors, and a lengthy finish.
The 2018 Barón de Magaña is a red blend produced with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from their oldest vineyards, looking for a fresher wine that expresses the limestone soils from their vineyards.
On the nose, the first aromas to appear are those of the barrel aging; the most evident being vanilla, smoky notes, caramel and roasted coffee beans. On gently swirling the glass, these combine with aromas of black fruits. The blend of grapes give it a complex structure and aromatic intensity.
Quinta Milu is the brain child and family business of Austrian born Germán Blanco and with the help of local expert Javier Collio they are turning Rioja on its head. Germán has created a micro winery and a new style Rioja that involves minimal intervention and zero oak.
