There’s lots of Chenin between here and Santa Barbara, but there is good reason to traverse all those miles. Of all the sites with which the winery works, Jurassic Park, planted on its own roots on quartz sand atop lime- stone in the late 1970s exhibits the most vintage variation, and small variations create very strong signals in the wine.
The Legan vineyard is a rugged own-rooted planting of Pinot Noir situated at 1,600’ above the tiny community of Coralitos. The hearty vines at Legan are surrounded by the dense Redwood forest of the Southern Santa Cruz Mountains and have been dry farmed since 1980 in deep sandy loam soil.
36 year old vines grown in Franciscan shale and sandy loam over serpentine in the Santa Cruz Mountains at 2,200’, on the top of Montebello Road above Cupertino. Destemmed and fermented with native yeast then basket pressed to 20% new French oak barrels for 22 months. 10 barrels produced.
This delicious, versatile wine begins with aromas of blackberry, rose hip, dried cranberries and hints of boysenberry followed by notes of violets and crushed spices.
A nice beef bouillon aroma sets a meaty tone, accompanied by more genteel aromas of dried rose petals and blackcap raspberries. There's a nice balance between the restrained black cherry, black tea and lemon flavors, and the wine's modest acidity and tannins.
Even at this early stage, this wine is long on flavor and texture, showing all the red raspberry and blackberry fruit that were apparent at harvest. Also coming forward are layers of dark chocolate, graphite, incense, and a wide array of baking spices.
