Peña Aladas, or “winged stones” refers to a group of small, rocky vineyard plots well over 100 year old in age and surrounded by pine forests.
Clean and bright in appearance with a greenish yellow tint. Extraordinarily elegant nose of ripe white fruit, apples, pears, custard apples, citrus fruit, lemon peel and stone fruit. It is very expressive in the mouth, creamy yet fresh.
This is a non-vintage Vega Sicilia and a tribute to tradition. Unico Reserva Especial is a true homage to the history of Spanish wine, perfectly combining the characteristics of different Unico vintages. Only the best Unico vintages are used to produce this iconic and remarkably complex wine. It is a blend of time, virtues, experiences, and emotions that shape the most profound nature of a proprietary, unique style: the Vega Sicilia style.
Unlike the site specific wines of Terroir Al Limit, Terroir Històric is devoted to expressing the complex character of the whole of Priorat in two colors: white and red. While the project launched in 2015 is a remarkable incubator for new plantings from the clay and schist soils of Montsant, it is also a liquid homage, utilizing the négocient tradition of the past to secure a sustainable future.
Bright color, lush cherry red color of trim Cardinals, slightly garnet and great intensity. Clean, bright and dense tears enveloping and complex nose, good intensity and modern cut. With a bouquet of aromas which highlights the fruit liqueur, vanilla, dark chocolate and spices. Round, balanced and structured. Long finish.
Destí is intense dark-cherry red in color with a garnet rim. Complex on the nose with aromatic notes of red fruit, especially raspberries and redcurrants, balanced by spicy tones against a backdrop of cassis. It has a balsamic taste across the palate, with hints of sloes and pomegranates. Elegant and silky, it is well balanced with sweet, rounded tannins that lead to a smooth, lingering finish.
2017 was a very challenging year, as most of their vineyards in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja were affected by frost, unlike others in nearby Laguardia. Not only was it frost, but they also had hail later on in the season. Quantities suffered—they told me they lost 70% of the crop in Rioja that year—but they were happy about the quality of the 2017 Macán, being very careful with the fermentation and separating the press wine by quality.
Somehow cooperatives developed a bad reputation. While it is certainly true that cooperatives can make mediocre wine, it is also true that estates can be guilty of the same crime. It’s not the nature of the business that determines quality, but what happens in the vineyard and cellar. Burgans is a custom cuvée made for European Cellars by Martin Codax, the largest cooperative in Rías-Baixas. Founded in 1986 by about 50 families with small plots of Albariño around the village of Cambados, it has grown to include almost 600 families and well over 3000 small parcels of Albariño.
