At the very top of the Côte de Beaune between the villages of Meursault and Puligny, a few vineyard rows abut the forest known as the Bois de Blagny. Conditions are slightly cooler due to the elevation and the proximity to these woods, and the soil is chock-full of blocks of limestone.
The origin of Lot C-91 began in the fall of 1969 when Joe Heitz created this one-off cuvée, which was very normal in those days, as a more premium version of his already iconic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon bottling. Joe envisioned Lot C-91 as a greater step up in quality from the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with a higher quality of fruit sourcing, coming exclusively from the sought-after single vineyards of Heitz Cellar.
Tasting Note: With an ample and deep bouquet, it offers hints of berries and spices combined with mineral and balsamic notes. On the palate it reflects the extraordinary complexity and elegance characterized by marked minerality and important tannins and a finish of remarkable persistence.
Ideal conditions throughout the growing season brought the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to peak ripeness, resulting in vivid fruit flavors and soft, supple tannins. Fruit set for Cabernet Sauvignon was excellent, which allowed us to produce a wine that is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
A deft balancing act between luscious black fruit and herbal notes of black olive and fresh mint—the two sides of merlot. Currently the softest and most expansive on the palate with loads of blackberry leading the way. Velvet. Remarkably long finish that echoes the depth of fruit. Textured for immediate drinking pleasure, but structured also to reward a decade in the cellar. Such a pleasure to be able to offer this special wine after a long absence.
