Vadio Bairrada Branco 2014
The Vadio Project's mission is the resurrection of the region’s traditional grape varieties, Bical, Cercial, and Baga (red) which have suffered lack of notoriety with the advent of international varietals in Portugal. This white, a blend of Bical and Cercial, has a remarkable texture, with apples, herbs, and citrus on the palate, good depth, and a stylish finish.
Vadio is a new project in Bairrada, a region southwest of the famous Douro region of Portugal. Bairrada has an excellent climate for viticulture and the soil is rich in lime. Luis Patrão learned the trade at the renowned winery Esporão until he took charge of the family business from his father. Vadio owns ten hectares of vineyard which are mainly planted with the baga grape. In addition to this area is also made a special white wine of the Bical and cercial grapes. These two local grapes are highly resistant to heat and so they keep a lovely acidity. The calcareous soil this wine has besides the ripe fruit acids and a pleasant minerality typical of wines from Bairrada.
