Rust en Vrede Estate 2013
Deep crimson-red color. Aromas of cumin and cassis are supported by fresh blueberries and notes of shortbread on the finish. Well-integrated tannins with lush red fruit give the initial impression. Red licorice and savory flavors carries through on the palate with ample grip on the finish.
Rust en Vrede was founded in 1694 by Willem Adrian van der Stel. It was originally made up of a larger property but in the early 1700's, it was divided into two with the original section remaining as Rust en Vrede. The first house on the estate was built in 1780 followed by a cellar in 1785. In 1790 a larger manor house was built, but a fire in 1823 destroyed the front gable, resulting in reconstruction and a rebuild-date sign. Jannie Engelbrecht purchased the winery in 1977 and in 1998 he handed the reigns over to his son, Jean Engelbrecht, who has worked to establish Rust en Vrede as one of South Africa's premium red-wine estates.
