From the moment you pull the cork, the density of the wine’s aromas fill the air. The scent comes at you in waves – macerated blackberries from a warm vintage; graphite from the fine gravel and sandy soils the vines are planted in; espresso bean and clove from the new French oak barrels; and, with ample exposure to oxygen the wine begins to reveal its classic Larkmead red fruit aromas.
This 2021 wine is a fine example of the charm, balance and satisfaction that fine Dundee Hills Pinot can provide. Translucent scarlet in colour, with magnetically attractive raspberry scents, once on the palate the wine is soft-contoured yet energetic, with arresting intensity of fruit.
The 2019 Gandona is simply magnificent. A wine of soaring intensity and structure the 2019 marries power richness and depth. Inky dark fruit chocolate black cherry leather and torrefaction all race across the palate. There is plenty of the opulence readers have come to expect here but with an extra kick of vibrancy that adds a feeling of energy the earlier vintages did not have. Its color is a bright ruby red. On the nose, it is clean and precise, with hints of morello cherries, wild berries and a moderate spiciness. On the palate it reveals a full-bodied, assertive flavor, which expresses both great intensity and elegance.
