The color of Gammes en May, the label and the clear glass may lead one to think that this is not a serious wine but they would be wrong. There is a gregariousness to Thierry Michon who is prone to take up the accordion at a moment’s notice but there is nothing frivolous about Thierry or his wines.
The more limited cuvee, the 2007 Gigondas Terrasses des Dentelles, exhibits super precision, a terrific minerality that comes through the lavish amounts of black raspberry, blueberry, and spring flower characteristics, superb ripeness, a saturated ruby/purple color, full-bodied power, and admirable elegance, purity, and acidity.
The taste is rich, fresh, balanced with a good structure based on mineral content. The finish is elegant and full-bodied with the scent of peach. It has a deep straw yellow color, brilliant and full-bodied. The intense and lingering aroma alternates between smooth scents of white fruit and hints of vanilla, fern and mint.
Force & Grace Chardonnay boasts an aromatic nose of crisp apples, ripe melon, and sweet citrus. The bright palate draws on flavors of lemon and Fuyu persimmon, with an edge of stony minerality. While Silvaner remains the second most planted grape (after Riesling) in Germany, it has always remained tucked in the shadows. Frank Heyden quietly makes this example from old vines, and the quality shines so brightly that all shadows disappear in a fresh, zesty, mouth-wateringly delicious wash of Silvaner-ish-ness. Juicy and floral from start to finish, this is a great example of coaxing the best from a grape.
