A nearly opaque color sets in the glass with a hard, red complexion that is almost black. Aromas of ripe blueberries and candied plum mingle with toasted oak and charred vanilla. The 2014 Experiment H3.4 wine was aged entirely in 300L barrels, known as "logheads," and the resulting wine has great fruit character and vibrancy. It is a wine with both power and focus, exhibiting lively notes of cherry, plum, sage, violets, boysenberry, and black tea.
The 2021 growing season was preceded by mild and dry winter weather from January through March. Winter rainfall was largely absent across Northern California and the Napa Valley entered the growing season with rain totals that ranged from 40 to 60% below normal and had temperatures that were two to three degrees warmer than average.
Coming on the heels of a prolonged multi-year drought, the 2016 growing season was defined by near-ideal conditions. Rain in March and early April allowed the vines to start the spring with ample moisture in the soil, making for healthy canopies and balanced vines.
In 1986, a small block of Abbey Ridge vineyard was specially planted with the Martin Ray Massale of Pino Noir. Now, 30 years later, we harvested and fermented these vines separately to produce 2 berrels of an exceptional wine.
