Quilt Fumé Blanc 2021
The 2021 growing season was preceded by mild and dry winter weather from January through March. Winter rainfall was largely absent across Northern California and the Napa Valley entered the growing season with rain totals that ranged from 40 to 60% below normal and had temperatures that were two to three degrees warmer than average.
In March to early April, the weather was three to four degrees colder than normal causing budbreak and early season grapevine growth to be delayed. By mid-April, the weather pattern transitioned from abnormally cold weather to warm weather and the grapevine growth was both uniform and even. While conditions for bloom and fruit set during late May and into early June were ideal, the number of clusters per vine was markedly below average, which resulted in a light crop of Sauvignon Blanc. The light crop ripened quickly during the warmer than normal summer weather and the fruit matured with beautiful colors of white gold and light green. The Sauvignon Blanc fruit was accented by the fruit flavors that ranged from ripe pear, green apple, and honeydew melon complimented by a hint of grassy aromas. We were pleased that the fruit flavors and acidity were in balance, and we began harvesting fruit for our Fume Blanc program in early September.
Tasting Notes
Pale sunlight in the glass, this beautiful expression of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon aged in oak barrels is a delight on the nose with bright Meyer lemon tones intermingled with tropical mango, lychee and a hint of brioche. The aromas follow through and dance on the palate with bright acidity that follows through to a lingering, yet smooth finish. This new addition to our Napa Valley Quilt lineup can be enjoyed with everything from fresh Oysters to Roasted Pork Loin.
