For Peraj Petita, Capcanes selects the best grapes from their indigenous varieties - Garnacha, Samso, and Ull de Llebre - which are harvested from ancient vines up in the mountains. Peraj Petita exhibits lively fruit and reflects the terroir and great varieties of the area. This is a vegan wine.
2017 was a very challenging year, as most of their vineyards in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja were affected by frost, unlike others in nearby Laguardia. Not only was it frost, but they also had hail later on in the season. Quantities suffered—they told me they lost 70% of the crop in Rioja that year—but they were happy about the quality of the 2017 Macán, being very careful with the fermentation and separating the press wine by quality.
A blend of Garnacha Tintorera, Palomino, Trousseau, Garnacha, and Mencia, from vineyards that range from 800-1000 meters in altitude. Grapes are de-stemmed and fermentation and aging is in a combination of tanks, amphorae, and cement eggs. A lovely, light bodied red, with subtle tannic structure, and bright red floral aromatics.
Macán 2018, a vibrant, elegant, and subtle vintage. A vintage with nuances, definition, and a trendsetting feeling.
100% Tempranillo aged 4 months in barrel and 4 months in bottle. The label honors Herminia Casas Madorrán, the wife of an early proprietor and the namesake of the winery.
Sweet berries with some walnut husk and hints of licorice. It’s medium-bodied with light, round tannins and a linear, polished finish. 100% tempranillo. Drink now.

From the hot, dry plains of La Mancha in southern Spain, comes this red wine with copius fruit and pleasant tannins. Sunshine in a bottle, a great every day wine, made for everyman; a fine accompaniment for all types of meat, cheese and pasta.
The 2012 Unico Tinto is concentrated, juicy, silky, and well-defined. Notable characteristics included the healthiness, the strong coloring, and very ripe tannins suitable for ageing. An excellent vintage.
The bedrock is schistous: the same rock that underlies the Port vineyards of the Douro further downstream.
This is very polished and pretty with dark fruit and hints of cedar and vanilla. It’s medium-bodied with well-integrated tannins and a vivid finish. 100% tempranillo. Enjoyable now, but can improve in the bottle.
