Pinot Noir from limestone and decomposed granite soils of Enz Vineyard in Lime Kiln Valley (San Benito County). The Enz family has been farming this site since 1967 (the vineyard is also notable for Mourvedre, where the old vines date to 1895). The Pinot Noir vines were re-grafted onto much older roots in the 1980’s, and have been farmed organically without irrigation. The fruit was handpicked between August 24th and September 1st and fermented with 30% whole clusters. The wine was matured for 13-months in neutral barrels and puncheons, unfined/unfiltered.
Deep Blue is our first Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, as opposed to our single vineyard offerings. We sourced fruit from our two primary Pinot Noir producers: Momtazi & Johan Vineyards, both Demeter-certified Biodynamic sites that produce drastically distinct wines.
Spellbound wines are sourced from winegrowing regions throughout California where warm sun and cool, moonlight nights result in expressive, approachable, balanced wines. These wines are true to their roots, expressing ripe varietal character with a style that elevates every occasion — from special events to everyday meals around the family table.
The Clos Electrique Rouge from 2021 is an astounding wine with notes of leather, porcini mushrooms, forest floor and a dose of plums bringing in the finish. Its perfect silky mouth and a nice round finish cry for a café 90’s Duck l’orange, chanterelles sautéed with butter and sherry, a Ribeye cooked to perfection or perhaps even cardboard. I mean really, this wine makes anything taste better.
Over the years, we have been fortunate to work with many great vineyards that span a diverse and varied view into a region that many would call the heartland of California Pinot Noir. Our goal is to create a wine that shows the essence of this iconic appellation. No matter the vintage, there is often a recognizably complex mouthfeel, bright red fruit, and texture to the wine. This vintage displays beautiful cranberry and boysenberry notes, with layered baking spices, complemented by a hint of vanilla on the finish.
This exquisite wine opens with an intense bouquet of floral aromatics, including hints of dried savory herbs and violets, providing a captivating sensory experience from the first sip. The wine's balanced acid and tannin structure create a velvety texture on the palate, while the jammy boysenberry, baking spice, and sour cherry notes add layers of complexity and richness to the flavor profile. The wine finishes with a sophisticated and lasting impression, leaving a remarkable taste that will linger on your palate.
From our estate located on Highway 246 in the north corridor of the Sta. Rita Hills and planted in 2016, the soils here consist of Elder series loams over marine sedimentary rock below. The pinot noir sits to the eastern side, and also the upper slope of the field, on the darkest, most clay rich soils on the property which are most conducive to producing exceptional pinot noir.
Bota's Pinot Noir is a gorgeously fruity expression of the romanticized grape. It begins with a sweet bouquet of cherry pie and a hint of savory herbs. It opens to rhubarb, black cherry and clove, followed by a brisk finish.
Johan Vineyard is an 85-acre, Demeter-certified biodynamic site in the Willamette Valley, south of McMinnville and west of Salem. This site is almost always our last Pinot pick of harvest. Although it's a relatively low-elevation site, due to its proximity to the coast and the winds that howl through the Van Duzer Corridor every summer afternoon, the fruit here tends to ripen later than in our other vineyards.
