Von Winning II Sauvignon Blanc Trocken 2016

No wines have surprised and confounded me more than these in the past several years. They’re a million miles away from other German SBs, and they never set foot in New Zealand. They’re rather like some unlikely confluence of the Styrian (from volcanic soils) and the ambitious white Bordeaux. Overt, “sweet” fruit; you can call it green but it’s more toward herbs and less toward veggies or brassicas.

Weingut von Winning is a wine producer located in the Pfalz region of Germany. It is a founding member of the VDP and produces a range of wines made from Riesling from premium vineyards in the villages of Ruppertsberg, Deidesheim and Forst. The estate was founded in 1849 by Dr. Andreas Deinhard. His son-in-law, Leopold von Winning, took control of the estate in 1907, and raised the quality and profile of the wines.
