Shenk’s Homestead Sour Mash whiskey is one of two legacy brands produced by the Michter’s Distillery in Louisville, KY which honours the legacy and history of both the brand and original Michter’s Distillery in Schaefferstown, PA. With records indicating that distillation had been taking place at a distillery (which would eventually become known as Michter’s) in Schaefferstown by Swiss Mennonite farmers John and Michael Shenk around the year 1753, Shenk’s has thus been named in their honour and is a small batch American whiskey made using the traditional sour mash technique. Since the 1990’s, the Michter’s team has been doing pioneering work to re-establish the high-quality American Rye whiskey category. The May 2015 inaugural release of Michter’s US★1 Barrel Strength Rye marked yet another milestone in that quest. For maturation, the Rye distillate is entered into the barrel at 103 proof, rather than a more industry standard higher proof.

Woodford Reserve Distillery (Versailles, KY) has announced the release of its 2023 “Batch Proof”. Tipping the scales at 124.7 proof (62.35% ABV), it uses Woodford’s standard mash bill with direct barrel to bottle entry. The flagship brand proof being 90.4 proof, this is a sizable increase of nearly 40%.
