Santadi Grotta Rossa Carignano del Sulcis 2009
Carignan (Mazuelo) | Italy
Grotta Rossa means 'Red Grotta', and this Sardinian wine is made of 100% Carignano red grape variety from vines in the southern Sulcis region, grown on mixed, clay-sand and calcareous soil. The climate in this area is hot and dry in summer, and mild in winter, giving this wine wonderful concentration from the Mediterranean sun.
Look for an intense, red fruit-driven nose with hints of licorice, pepper and earth. On the palate, the wine is elegant, silky-textured and round, with good body and a food-friendly style. Not aged in oak, this red maintains its wonderful acidity for pairing with food: try with red meat, game and fowl or with cheeses & dark olives.
