Laphroaig Cairdeas Fino Cask

The Laphroaig distillery, located on the southern coast of the island of Islay, was founded in 1815 by the Johnston brothers. Always heavily peated, with a distinctly medicinal character, it is considered by many to be the most flavorful Scotch whisky made. Each year their master distiller, John Campbell, creates a special limited-edition malt to celebrate friendship (Cairdeas” in Gaelic). This 2018 Fino Cask in the latest of these releases. For it, the distillery took some fully matured Laphroaig (8-10 years old), first placed it in first-fill Bourbon casks before giving it additional ageing in Fino sherry casks; the result is a big, booming giant with hefty doses of smoke and asphalt as well as peat and salt, and finally an underlying note of honeyed fruits
