After a stunning 2-year-old season in 1947, famed trainer Ben Jones knew that their horse was set to have a breakout 3-year old season. In 1948, Citation furthered his campaign toward becoming a legend. He began the season with a handful of wins, Then Eddie Arcaro was tapped to jockey Citation. The first race pairing the two was a disappointing loss at the Chesapeake Trail Stakes. This would be the last race.
The name has two meanings. The 20-year-old bourbon matured twice as long as the standard Eagle Rare 10-year-old bourbon. Also, the Double Eagle decanter features two sculptured crystal glass eagles, one inside the bottle, while the other serves as the stopper.

The Willett Distilling Company or Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, as it is also known, is a small, family-owned company that produces labels such as Willett Pot Still Reserve, Willett Family Estate, Johnny Drum, Old Bardstown, Noah’s Mill, Rowan’s Creek, Pure Kentucky and Kentucky Vintage. They’re located in Bardstown, Kentucky. As a relatively large independent bottling company, they’re called the big daddy of Bourbon and Rye Bottling. One of the real fathers of bourbon is Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr. He was adopted by his uncle, Edmund Haynes Taylor Snr., who rechristened him as his junior, after becoming an orphan at the age of five in 1830. Due to his honorary title of Kentucky Colonel, E.H. Taylor Jr. is also referred to as Colonel Taylor. Taylor established and owned seven distinct distilleries throughout the course of his career, and because of his advocacy for the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, he is regarded as "the father of modern bourbon."
