Fashions change, and formulae suit. Blended whiskies of the 1970s, ’80s, and ‘90s are very different from today’s versions, even when the brand name remains the same. The Extinct Blends Quartet as it unfolds will reimagine four of our favorite blended Scotches from yesteryear, using some of our rarest and most idiosyncratic stocks of whisky.
The 2019 vintage marks the fortieth Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon release from Joseph Phelps Vineyards. This latest bottling highlights beautiful aromatics of dark fruit, cigar box, dried herbs, graphite notes and pain grille. Expressive Bing cherry, licorice, blueberry and blackberry layer this silky smooth wine of great depth and personality. Richly nuanced with supple tannins and a lingering velvety finish.
Grenache (Garnacha) "Gambrels of the Sky" comes from an Emily Dickinson poem entitled “I dwell in Possibility,” and though this feels a little lofty, it seemed appropriate for a wine dedicated to my remarkable grandmother, Frances Howard Peterson. For the sixth release of the Master Blender Collection, Mount Gay Master Blender Trudiann Branker has put together a blend with some of the oldest rum stocks in the Mount Gay bonds. A classic Bajan blend of pot and column distillates, both had been aged in ex-American whiskey casks for 20 years in Barbados, where both the heat and humidity accentuate the interaction with the casks. This tropical aging process created deeply aromatic flavours of burnt oak and toasted vanilla.
