Stéphane Usseglio, son of Raymond, has taken over the domaine in the last few years and he is pushing to reach the potential of the family’s holdings, some of he best of Châteauneuf. Half his vines are situated near the road in the lieu-dit “La Crau” and the other half on the hill across the road from the actual ruins of the new castle of the Pope.
Beloved by mixologists, Dubonnet Rouge is a staple at any high-class cocktail bar. It traces its roots all the way back to 1846, when Parisian chemist and wine merchant Joseph Dubonnet developed it in order to please the palates of French soldiers battling malaria.
Giraud Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is a distinguished red wine hailing from the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the Rhône Valley, France. With a southerly exposure, this 3.22 hectare vineyard is a mix of clay and lime. Oak barrels are used in fermentation bringing about soft and subtle tannins. The “Cellier aux Moines” parcel is very old with records dating back to 1258.
The generic Santenay is made from old vines – 50 years of average age – is a good start. It’s quite forward – 70% whole cluster – with a lovely organic fruit spiced with cinnamon and allspice. On the palate rich and velvet with a lavish feel for a wine at this level.
