On a fall afternoon in 1976, winemaker Joel Peterson drove out to Dry Creek to collect grapes destined for one of his debut wines. Under a threatening sky "besieged" by rain clouds with lightning glinting in the hills, he worked alone lugging crate after crate to his truck. As he worked he thought the two ravens flying above were harassing him, cackling and cawing "Nevermore" like Poe's raven. But as the sun set, Joel recalled a Native American legend about a wise and wily raven who tutored early man in the art of survival.
