The first-growth 2005 Château Margaux (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot), a lavish fragrance of blackcurrants, velvety new saddle leather, spring flowers and spice soars from the glass.

Inky bright-rimmed ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet displays sexy black and blue fruit liqueur scents complicated by suggestions of potpourri vanilla and incense. Stains the palate with sweet deeply concentrated boysenberry cherry cola and fruitcake flavors; a sexy violet pastille nuance emerges with aeration. Rich but also impressively balanced with velvety tannins building slowly on a strikingly long penetrating finish.

The 2017 The Flight is all about sensuality and nuance, both of which it has in spades. Precise and aromatically expressive with striking finesse, the 2017 is also a rare Flight that is going to drink well right out of the gate.

This is a non-vintage Vega Sicilia and a tribute to tradition. Planted in 1999, Levy & McClellan is a project by Bob Levy, who has been at Harlan Estate since its beginning, and by Martha McClellan, who is winemaker for Sloan and Checkerboard.

Tasted at the château, the 2005 Chateau d’Yquem delivers a similar performance as last year. Lucid in colour, the bouquet is detailed with very pure honey, vanilla and almond scents, still a little new oak to be fully assimilated but demonstrating superb focus.
