Chianti covers a large part of Tuscany, just below Florence, and within it, there are many smaller regions, some of which are designated as DOC (Denominazione di origine controllata) and DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). The original area that was called Chianti, is now known as the Chianti Classico wine region, or "The Heart of Chianti", and it produces premium wines with medium body. Also with the Chianti region is the town of Montalcino, which produces the acclaimed Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
