The Hess Collection Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
On the nose, you'll welcome aromas of bright cherry and blackberry, with hints of vanilla, nutmeg, and cedar from aging in new French oak. Distinctive flavors of cherry paired with graham cracker crust are joined by notes of vanilla, cassis, and rich, creamy caramel in a lingering, gentle finish. A bit unusual in contrast to other vintages, but decidedly delightful. The 2010 vintage will be remembered for its long, cool growing season and the absence of excessive heat events, which allowed for ripe flavors to develop on the vine without excessive sugar accumulation. The result is an elegant balance of fruit flavors and acidity with lower alcohol. In your glass, enjoy a sweet entry with soft, supple tannins. Hess Family Estates was founded in 1844 by Johann Heinrich Hess in Berne, Switzerland. For more than 100 years, beer was the central business. When he died, his son, Donald Hess, took over the company and soon became an entrepreneur. In the early 1960s, anticipating the surge of demand for bottled water, Donald created Valser Water, which would become Switzerland's leading mineral-water company. In 1978, the establishment of the Hess Collection Winery on Mount Veeder in the Napa Valley started an epic journey that would see vines planted and art museums built across the globe, culminating with Bodega Colome—the highest vineyard in the world in Argentina. Donald Hess was attracted to Mount Veeder for its elevation and unique mountain climate, which he believed would yield the best grapes to produce great wines. Mount Veeder is distinguished among Napa Valley's mountain districts for having the highest elevation, coolest growing season and geologically diverse soils. True to the unique mountain terroir, Hess Mount Veeder wines are known for their complexity, structure, and elegance. Another relatively cool vintage on the mountain offers the softer side of the Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, a vintage that combines classic mountain vigor with just a touch of agreeable elegance.
