Tenuta Santa Maria alla Pieve Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore 2009
With its immediately recognizable character, this Valpolicella Ripasso is the fullest expression of the Veronese winemaking tradition, in accordance with Santa Maria alla Pieve's own centuries-old family expertise. Vivid ruby-red color. Intense aromas of cherry, blueberry, and licorice, with hints of cinnamon and pepper spices. A soft and warm palate, supported by thick, velvety tannins and a very balanced acidity. A long finish with fruity sensations.
75% Corvina, 10% Rondinella, 15% Corvinone. The Santa Maria alla Pieve estate is located in the Veneto region of Italy, inside the Val d'Illasi ("Illasi Valley"). Built in the 16th century, a Scaligeri tower was incorporated with the estate. General Massena used this tower in 1805 to lead Napoleon's troops in the Battle of Caldiero. There is also a 11th-century Romanesque pieve ("church") and a Pietra Romana ("Roman Stone") located near the front of the estate. This stone is used as the company's logo, evoking a presence of ancient centurions and joint-roads that were built by the Romans right in the area. In 1860, the estate was purchased by the Bertani family.
