Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesca, and Touriga Nacional are the major grape varieties. The name Quinta do Noval first appeared in land registers in the year 1715, making it one of the oldest port houses. Quinta Quinta do Noval is also unique among top port houses (the only historic port shipper that bears the same name of its vineyard) and an innovative port house—Luiz Vasconcelos Porto transformed many of the narrow older terraces into the broader terraces that are such a distinctive feature of Noval with their whitewashed staircases. These terraces permit a more efficient use of the land and a better exposition to the sun, and were considered revolutionary at the time. In 1894 after a devastation by phylloxera, the house was sold to Antonio Jose da Silva, a port shipper from Gaia and father-in-law to Luiz Valsconcelos Porto, who restored the property by replanting its vineyards. Since 1993, Quinta do Noval has belonged to the prestigious winegrowing group AXA Millesimes, continuing its reputaion for being an innovative, independent producer. Quintas do Noval 2008 Unfiltered LBV is a single-vineyard LBV, made from grapes exclusively grown in Quinta do Noval's own vineyards, at the heart of the Douro valley.
