Penfolds Bin 8 Cabernet Shiraz 2014
This elegant wine shows ripe, sweet fruit flavors supported by softly integrated oak and silky tannins. Bright red color. Youthful fruit pastille, blue fruits, and wine gum aromatics, yet stylistically genteel—an altogether different style. Also, fruit-derived scents of violet, lavender, and talc are apparent while oak is present, yet well hidden. A medium-bodied palate that is balanced, youthful, and bright.
62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Shiraz. In 1844 Dr. Penfold and his wife Mary purchased the 500-acre Magill (originally Mackgill) estate on the outskirts of Adelaide. Initially their wines, made from grenache, were prescribed as tonic wines for anemic patients. Harking back to this origin of prescribed tonics, roadside billboards in Australia used to read "Penfolds 1844 to Evermore." Following Dr Penfold's death in 1870, the vineyards and winery were left in the very capable hands of his wife Mary. The estate remained in the Penfold family until 1976 and is currently owned by Treasury Wine Estates. The Penfolds Bin collection of wines began in 1959, part of a modern era of Penfolds innovation that has resulted in a diverse family of wines with ageless appeal. Each Bin wine bears the distinctive Penfolds quality stamp whilst exhibiting a unique style of its own.
