100% Tannat. The Phillips family has been farming since Andrew Harshner and his wife Lucille homesteaded 160 acres near the town of Lodi, following the Civil War in the 1860s. Originally devoted to vegetables, the Phillips' farm evolved to include many different fruits, including 15 different wine varietals that were shipped throughout the country during Prohibition with instructions on "how not to have the grapes turn into wine." These days, Michael and David Phillips represent the fifth generation of growers in Lodi with their 650 acres of premium wine grapes. Originating in the Southwest region of France, this varietal is notable for its high tannin levels, raspberry aromas, and dark color. To date, there is only 140 total acres planted in California. The five-acre vineyard, used for this botting, has found a friendly foothold in the hilly southeastern edge of Lodi, CA. The red, gravelly loam soil in this area provides excellent drainage for this water-adverse variety.
