Merk Refosco Vigne Vecchie 2011
Strong, full, and velvety, Refosco Vigne Vecchie has a typical bouquet. For its finesse and elegance, it is also an important wine for the entire meal. Tradition pairs it with stewed guinea fowl; the ideal accompaniment to game birds and aged cheese made from cow's milk. Serve at 62–64 degrees F.
100% Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. Bottled by Casa Gerretto, originally called Azienda Vinicola Geretto Antonio. In the early 1950s, Cavalier Antonio Geretto established the winery. He was inspired by a passion for wine rather than by purely commercial reasons, so he paid the utmost attention to the choice of grapes and vines. His company became well known for the quality of its products and was soon able to acquire more vineyards in Friuli, winning wine-tasting prizes in the area not long after. In 1976 Casa Geretto took over Azienda Agricola Merk, in the DOC Friuli Aquileia area, in order to meet and satisfy the needs of a market which was becoming increasingly more demanding. Then in 1999, Dino Geretto reestablished a more traditional winery at San Stino di Livenza, focusing on the quality demands of the consumer. Today his wife Carla and their two sons, Flavio and Antonio, continue the family tradition of love for the land and their wine. Merk wines are produced in the Fruili Aquileia Doc area, where the Geretto family owns vineyards in Scodovacca di Cervignano. The soil consists of alluvial sands and shales, and with the sea nearby the climate is particularly mild. This favorable environment produces quality, full-bodied wines, which guarantee an enjoyable experience. This wine is produced in an area where the particular microclimate guarantees the Refosco its best expression, and comes from vines of more than twenty years. After a long maceration, it is matured for about thirteen months in oak barrels and for another period in the bottle.
