Luigi Pira Barolo Vigna Marenca 2003
Nebbiolo | Italy
The mellow, self-effacing Giampaolo Pira owns parcels in three of the Serralunga area's top crus: Margheria, Marenca and Rionda.
The powerful and slightly rustic Margheria generally needs extra bottle aging, while the floral Vigna Rionda, rather gentle for a wine from Serralunga, is aged in all new barriques. Don't overlook the Dolcetto and Barbera: the former is intense and complex, while the latter, aged in oak, melds power with clearly defined fruit character.
