La Spinona Dolcetto d'Alba 2013
Medium-bodied, dry. This Dolcetto has a dense violet-red color and a fragrant grapey nose. The palate is dry with full-on red berries finishing with plum and bitter almond. Pair with mushroom pasta, roasted meats, and eggplant parm.
Dolcetto (the little sweet one) is an early ripening, easy drinking grape that is ready for picking several weeks before Nebbiolo. Its preferred terroirs are located in the DOCs of Acqui, Alba, Asti, Diano d'Alba, Dogliani, Langhe Monregalesi, and Ovada; the most common areas are Alba and Asti. Needless to say, there's lots of Dolcetto made in Piedmont - much of it is serviceable daily wine, but then there are the finer ones like this.
