Gondomar del Reino Roble 2001
100% Tempranillo. Elaborated and estate bottled by Alberto y Benito of Bodegas Briego. Winemaking has always been a tradition in the village of Fompedraza, although some of the vineyards disappeared with the agricultural reconvention. The Benito Hernando brothers, Fernando, Gaspar, and Javier, have recovered this tradition that their father was already exercising in the 60s. They considered this a project of fight and illusion and have named it Briego, which is a synonym for fight—fight for the quality of this wine, fight to defend rural life, and fight to revive the village of Fompedraza. They started by buying back vineyards. In 1988, they began replanting in the municipalities of Curiel de Duero, Pesquera, Penyafiel, and Fompedraza. In 1992, their dream finally came true when they elaborated their fist wine under the D.O. Ribera del Duero. Today they own 70 hectares in production and they control the quality and production of vineyards containing 60-plus-year-old vines.
