The winery at Checkerboard is a small building reflecting a 'four-poster’ barn style found in early New England. We did not want a large building impacting the quiet and natural surrounding environment.
The aromas of 2013 Checkerboard Aurora Vineyard offer nuances of spice, smoke, and roasted game meat. On the palate, seductive, dark fruit is seamlessly interlaced with sage and tobacco leaf.
There is a lovely finesse to the wines, a complexity of ripe red fruits, spice, and dried currants. The underlying power intensifies the mid palate providing a background of layers that linger far into the finish for a smooth, balance finale.
From above, this patchwork of vineyards between St. Helena and Calistoaga really resembles a checkerboard. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, barrel fermented, pressed, and then put back in a new barrel to mellow.
