Castello Monaci Artas 2007
Artas the Messapian Chief, who in 413 B.C. in accordance with an ancient treaty of friendship between Messapia and Athens, provided 150 javelin throwers in support of the Athenian expedition to Sicily. Bright, deep ruby-red color with a complex and ethereal bouquet, it has a soft, very enveloping flavor with elegant tannins and a pleasing aftertaste of red fruits. It goes with roasted red meats, game, and goat cheese or medium-matured cheese.
100% Primitivo (Zinfandel). Not far from the town of Lecce and from the sea, on the road to Taranto, at the gates of Salice Salentino, centuries-old olive trees and flourishing vineyards surround Castello Monaci. The estate is housed in a 16th-century castle with medieval foundations once run by Basiliani monks who maintained a long winemaking tradition. The Memmo family has owned the estate since the 19th century, with Lina Memmo and husband Vitantonio Seracca as the current owners. The long corridor which links the main road to the castle is a line which goes through the estate; a meridian that divides the vineyards and opens the gates to the modern cellar.
