Big Basin Vineyards Homestead 2011
The wine possesses a beautiful dark red/purple color with a perfumed inky nose of dark black fruit, crushed rocks, and hints of acacia flowers, gamey spices, and anise. Bright and expressive on the palate with echoes of the dark berry fruit and gamey spices, mouth-coating tannins, lively acidity, and a finish that builds with intense notes of huckleberries. The moderate alcohol level and good acidity make this a great food wine and one that is likely to age exceptionally well, however, it is very approachable and enjoyable now.
48% Mourvedre, 24% Carignane, 18% Zinfandel, 7% Syrah, 3% Grenache. Every winery needs a spokesperson. Homestead is Big Basin's front runner. It represents the extraordinary terroirs of the Santa Cruz and Gabilan Mountains where they source all of their fruit. This wine embodies the vivacity and freshness Big Basin strives to capture in every wine they hand craft, in small lots with minimal intervention and natural fermentations. Aromatic with great body, balance and finish, this is a wine that reveals the exceptional vineyards behind it.
