Alpha Box & Dice Dolcetto Dead Winemaker's Society 2008
The grapes for the 2008 Dolcetto were sourced from a small planting of young vines grown at Kuitpo (Ky'po) which is located along the southwest escarpment of the Mount Lofty Ranges. The vineyard is at an elevation of 350 meters above sea level making this a cooler climate than that of neighboring McLaren Vale.
Dolcetto is ranked third in terms of vitis hierarchy in Piedmont. In Australia the variety is small in terms of the volume of plantings however dolcetto is planted in vast array of regions across the country. The variety is very accommodating in a range of different terroirs and is fairly easy to manage during the growing season in comparison with its other siblings e.g. Nebbiolo. Dolcetto is a grape that demonstrates balance in terms of sugars, acids and polyphenols across a range of different climatic and soil conditions which makes it very endearing to winemakers and allows a non-interventionalist approach to be applied to the fermentation and maturation of the wine.
